Going Green.... Gone a Little Too Far, YUCK!
I am all about saving the environment, through recycling, energy saving light bulbs, turning off the water while I brush my teeth, but, really, reusable menstrual pads??? The Lunapad, disgusting if you ask me! No, I have not physically held one in my hand or trialed one, but the whole idea sounds gross. Here goes... I will wear a pad, soil it with bodily fluid, rinse it in the sink or carry it with me throughout the day (soiled) until I can get home to rinse it, place it in my washer, clean it to wear at a later date. GROSS!
I am not totally convinced of the "Going Green" factor either. It is recommended that you wash your undergarments separately from all of your other clothes due to bacteria that collects while you wear them. So, you will have to wash the Lunapads separate from all your other wash for sanitary reasons, because I am quite sure your husband won't want his underwear washed in the same load as your Reusable Menstrual Pads, I don't know, just a hunch! Therefore, you will use a whole lot of water for one sack filled with a few pads. However, I guess you could have enough for a full load if you let them collect throughout your entire cycle. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!
Not as environmentally friendly as they appear to be. I get that you won't throw away another item that will fill our ever growing land fills, but seriously, we can't find any other way to save the environment? It is unsanitary, and all around disgusting, if I may say so myself.
Then, there is the Diva Cup. A soft, flexible silicon cup inserted into the vagina, much like a tampon, collecting your menstrual flow. You take it out, rinse it and re-insert it. DISGUSTING! Think about that woman who just emptied her Diva Cup in the stall you are about to exit! The previous occupant had to touch the same door you are about to touch.... with her soiled hand! Yep, gross!
In this case, I think sanitary trumps environmentally friendly!

I'm sorry but this post makes you sound completely uneducated. These products are actually very environmentally friendly are no more gross than commercial products. I mean you're still fine with touching the same door as someone who just yanked a tampon out, but not one who touched a diva cup? Honestly the principle and the gross out factor are the same. Think about it.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Luna pads this is how historically women took care of their menstrual cycles. It's not gross it's just different. I wash my daughter's poopy diapers since I use cloth diapers and I find poop much more offensive that menstrual blood. It's just about the culture you've been raised in. America is a disposable culture, hence why you use disposable pads. America and other industrialized countries are also the only ones who have problems with toxic shock syndrome, as a result of our use of disposable sanitary napkins. How about doing some research before going all 9th grade girl with your icks, yuck and ewwws.

ReplyDeleteI am sorry but you are completely rude....."uneducated"? I didn't think that blogging could be so harsh. I was simply stating my opinion, I appreciate the way you see the products, and welcome your opinion, but my goodness, I would NEVER call YOU "uneducated." I am open to discussions about they way we both see things, but refuse to participate in bashing each other. Sorry to have struck a cord with you, and I hope to not offend you with furture posts, if so, please kindly find another blog to comnment on!
To MooMooKITTEN,
ReplyDeleteYou were rude. You have no idea how wonderfull Jenn is and your comments were uncalled for. You have the right to your opinion as does Jenn, as do I, as does everyone. I too find these products gross. To each his own. If you want to use these products, good for you. They're not for me! I completely agree with Jenn. You don't need to be so mean in your reply to someone's opinion. We are all intitled to our own.
I'd be interested in learning the true environmental effects of the Lunapads vs. regular pads. You'd need to use a lot of water and energy to wash the Lunapads (though less if you have an energy efficient washing machine and put it on small load setting), but simply producing something also uses a ton of water and energy.
ReplyDeleteThe bleaching process is what really gets me. I do not want to put a bleached product into my body! Talk about disgusting and unhealthy...
I'm a huge divacup fan, mostly for the toxin/bleach reason, and environmental reasons as a secondary factor. I have to disagree with you about those being unsanitary. Any sensible person is going to use their other hand to open the door and touch things until they can wash their hands. Of course, that is putting a lot of faith into the population. I'm more grossed out about fecal matter being on door handles. But with all the bacteria they say is on a computer keyboard or a desk, it's not something I worry too much about, especially since I wash my hands after using the restroom anyway. Also, unless you have a really heavy flow, you probably won't need to empty your cup in a normal workday anyway.
But carrying around used Lunapads all day is not something I'd be too keen on!
